ABOUT SPOT RED

Spot Red Publishing is the pinnacle of the publishing-based careers of Caroline Reeves and Michael Frith. After meeting at Canterbury College of Art, where they both graduated with BA (Hons) degrees both Caroline and Michael worked in publishing. Spot Red is the culmination of their experience and talents, together they now produce limited edition books. This is the first title of a list that will become the epitome of high-quality art publishing.

Yacht is proving to set an exultant standard, making it all the more collectable. These books take a long time to produce and, with such exacting standards as established in the production of this publication, we can only look forward to more and varied titles. Those titles already in production include Marrakesh and Venice, and Big Heads – the first two, travel diaries with attitude, the third based on portraiture and celebrity.

“ Michael Frith tests the limits of this notoriously difficult medium. Some of these watercolours are so big that he had to paint them on the floor, using a mop as well as brushes and waiting for up to a day for each expansive wash to dry.

In Frith’s paintings, each confident spontaneous mark looks as though it came about of its own accord. But what seems to have come together effortlessly is as much the artful product of natural talent, concentrated practice and rich experience as a brilliant display of technique and sensibility by a virtuoso pianist. Michael Frith is quite simply one of the finest watercolourists working anywhere today.”
